In retirement, Florence Jowers is serving as the Director of Music and Organist at Christ Lutheran Church, Staunton. Previously, she was Associate Professor of Music and University Organist at Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory, NC. As part of her position there, she founded and directed the Lenoir-Rhyne Youth Chorus, a professional youth choir which has toured extensively in the southeast, and has participated in festivals in and tours in several states as well as England, France, Germany, and Austria. Ms. Jowers has served as president of Region 2 of the Association of Lutheran Church Musicians, Dean of the Hickory Chapter of the American Guild of Organists, and has served on the executive board and as secretary of the Charlotte Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. Ms. Jowers was selected as a Fellow of the Bach Aria Institute in Stonybrook, NY, and received a Rotary Scholarship for organ study with the late Anton Heiller in Vienna, Austria. She has served as clinician for many professional conferences, including ALCM, AGO, and PAM, and has performed throughout the United States and Germany, and also in Austria, Latvia, and the Czech Republic. She has performed twice at the Piccolo Spoleto Festival in Charleston, SC, and has been heard on NPR’s Pipedreams.
